10 Lame Excuses for Not Voting

March 22, 2018

OK Londoners, here's the deal. There's a local election about to happen. Yup, another election. And while you can pat yourself on the back for registering, it won't count if you don't remember to get out and vote.

Here are 10 of the lamest excuses we've hard for not getting out and making your voice heard...

  1. Netflix is Holding Me Hostage

We love a box set as much as the next guy and we know it's easy to lose track of time when you're 7 series deep. But let's remember the true beauty of TV on demand - the pause button! Your favourite show can wait until you're back from the polling station...

  2. I Have Too Many Errands to Run

There are only so many hours in the day, so if you're super busy with work, consider asking a proxy to vote for you. Then reward yourself with a scoop of Cookie Dough for your awesome multitasking abilities.

  3. It's a work day – I’m home too late!

We totally understand that you work really hard, but democracy is a great excuse to leave the office on time for once! Plus, did you know polling stations are open until 10pm? Good news - you can have your ice cream and eat it.

  4. I'm Too Busy Eating Ben & Jerry's

We know not much comes between you and your tub, but this one's important. If you really can't bear to be parted, grab a spoon and take your tub to the polling station for a little queue-time snack...

  5. I'm Hungover

When you've had one wine too many, there's nothing like burying your head under the pillow and not seeing daylight for 24 hours. But no matter how sorry you're feeling for yourself, democracy is worth getting out the house for.

  6. I Don't Think I have the Right ID to Vote

You don't need any ID to vote - in fact, you don't even need your polling card. If you're registered to vote, all you have to do is turn up at the right polling station and give your address.

  7. I Don't Fill Out Forms in My Spare Time

Nobody does. But come on, we're not asking you to submit an application here. Just roll up, give your address (yup, no actual writing involved!) and mark one little 'x' in the box of your choice.

  8. I Don't Know Where My Polling Station Is

The address of your nearest station will be on your polling card. Misplaced it? No worries - contact your local council and they can point you in the right direction or check out this handy website.

  9. I'll be Relaxing on a Beach on May 3rd

Well lucky old you. But that's no excuse - this is your chance to have your voice heard. Make sure you register for a postal vote or ask a proxy to vote for you. Find out more about that here.

  10. But Seriously... I'm So Hungover

    We talked about this already...

When it comes down to it, voting really isn't that hard. Put it this way: if you're able to head down to the shops for a tub of Ben & Jerry's, then you're able to vote. And having your say on Election Day, to us anyway, tastes even sweeter than a spoonful of your favourite flavour. Happy voting!
